PLACE

Interstate Magazine photographed El Paso in mid March of this year. Then, on August 3, 2019, a lone shooter opened fire at the Cielo Vista Walmart, killing 22 people and injuring 24 more. Events like this jarringly alter a city, as if the entire population were involved in a high speed car crash. Still, while the El Paso of today undoubtedly feels different from the El Paso photographed this past March, those earlier photographs nonetheless capture the same, ever evolving El Paso. It is a city that wears its Mexican roots unapologetically on its sleeve, integral to the warp and weft of the American tapestry. See the Photo Journal here.

SNEAK PEEK

West Memphis is to Memphis what East Saint Louis is to Saint Louis: a rough and tumble namesake just across the state line. But like East Saint Louis, beyond the dismal crime statistics is a community living an American day-to-day. Take a sneak peak of the work in progress. ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE

cover.png

We could use your help. Right now, we are looking for help on two upcoming photographic journals.

First, we are looking to capture in photographs daily suburban life. If you know any families living in suburbia who would share a slice of that life with a photographer, let us know.

Second, we are hoping to photograph life in office park offices around the country. If you know any business occupying such a space who would welcome a photographer, let us know.

As always, feel free to drop us a line at editors@interstatemagazine.com.

INTRODUCTION TO TYLER HICKS, A PHOTOGRAPHER YOU SHOULD KNOW

The Aftermath of an Airstrike in Gaza City by Tyler Hicks

The Aftermath of an Airstrike in Gaza City by Tyler Hicks

Interstate Magazine fastidiously captures the ordinary and every-day; it is adamantly not about breaking news or sensational photographs. There is, of course, an important place for such photojournalism, and any photojournalist who can capture humanity ensnared in the the sensational or horrific is a photographer worth knowing. Pulitzer Prize winner Tyler Hicks is one of the finest examples of such a photographer.

You can find more information on Tyler Hicks here, and a list of his work with the New York Times here.

EDITOR'S NOTE: A TALE OF TWO EL PASO'S

This past March, as part of Interstate Magazine’s coverage of Trans Pecos Texas (see parts one and two), I photographed the people and place that is – or was – El Paso, Texas. But that was all before the horrific events of August 3 at the Cielo Vista Walmart changed El Paso forever. What does that mean for the photos from March?
